Clairmarais takes its name from the Latin Clarus mariscus, the name given in 1140 by Bernard de Fontaine, abbot of Clairvaux, to the abbey he had just built in the Audomarois marshes. All that remains of this abbey are a few sections of wall and a 16th century farm. For centuries, the tradition of market gardening has been perpetuated and the watergangs are a real invitation to take a walk. You can see the bacôves, the boats that the inhabitants of the marsh still use to transport their crops. You will also find the exceptional site of the Romelaëre reserve and the magnificent Rihoult-Clairmarais forest.
