The town gained its present name in the 16th century, but its history dates back to the Merovingian period, Calonna meaning wetland and Ricwart being the name of a Gallo-Roman lord. Since the closure of its mineshaft in 1960, the town has continued to develop its industrial and tourist center by exploiting the Clarence valley, the river that bisects the commune. For a stroll, don't miss the 12th-century church, rebuilt in the 18th century, which is said to contain the vault of the former lords of Calonne-Ricouart, and the stained-glass windows of the Town Hall, depicting the town's main activities in three scenes.
