Chief town of the canton of the valley of Aspe, Accous is a typical commune near the Pyrenean mountain. The village still has a lively pastoralism with 190 farms. Today, visitors enjoy its preserved environment and its biodiversity, the opportunity to take a breath of fresh air in the countryside. The history of Accous is ancient. It has houses dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, identifiable by their sculpted pediments, but it is above all the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Saturnin-de-Jouers dating from the 12th century that is remarkable. The manor of Jouers was a lay abbey. It has an amazing square dovecote. The city is also famous for the great men who were born there. First of all the poet Cyprien Despourrins, known until the court of Louis XV for his texts making the apology of Bearn and the Occitan language. In the 20th century, Bertrand Lacaste, another child of the country, became bishop of Oran from 1946 to 1973. He will have an important role during the conflicts by being favorable to the decolonization of Algeria. Finally, Accous has an eco-museum. Located in an old cheese factory, you will find the history of cheese making techniques and culinary traditions associated with the cheese of the valley. In this valley, don't forget Borce with its medieval architecture or the cirque of Lescun nestled against the mountain. From hiking to cross-country skiing, this land of Art and History shares its warm territory without counting: this authentic valley is a must-see.
