Ardres is a charming little town some twenty kilometers inland from Calais. In the Middle Ages, the road linking Saint-Omer to Guînes crossed a small sandy eminence at the top of which was a cabaret. Travelers came here to drink Ceres liqueur. The place was called Ardre, meaning pasture. Occupied for seventeen years by the English, Ardres became the capital of Ardrésis in 1377. The town's motto, "Brave and faithful", is still relevant today. François I passed through the town in 1515, during the episode of the Camp du Drap d'Or, where he held talks with the English king Henry VIII.
