Aire-sur-la-Lys is a border town between the Audomarois and Artois regions, an ideal point of entry for visitors from the west. The historic center features winding, narrow streets inherited from the past, opening onto numerous squares and giving pride of place to water, with the Lys and Laquette rivers still reflected in some of the old houses. Founded in the 10th century, the town acquired a collegiate church and, under the dual influence of the Count of Flanders and the monks, prospered to the point of housing a guardhouse, now the bailliage. The town boasts twenty-three historic monuments.
