The history of this small town in the Pas-de-Calais is closely linked to the great History, and in particular to the First World War. Ablain-Saint-Nazaire is indeed home to the national necropolis of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette where 45,000 soldiers are buried. During the Great War and for one year, from the autumn of 1914 to 1915, bloody confrontations between French and German soldiers took place on the hill of Lorette. The toll was impressive: 188,000 soldiers, including 100,000 French, lost their lives defending the territory. The necropolis is distinguished by its 52 meter high lantern tower and its basilica chapel.
