Zuydcoote is a strange name. It's the geographical environment that gave the village its name. Zout means "salt" in Flemish and kot means "huts". Zuydcoote thus refers to the salt works that were already present in Roman times! Over the centuries, Zuydcoote was plundered and invaded, but the village prospered from the 14th century onwards, thanks to its small fishing port. Today, Zuydcoote is a village with the Mer et Nature label, part of the Dunes de Flandre, and boasts an incredible wealth of natural resources. You can reach the village via this natural area by taking the voie verte cycle route.
