Villeréal is a perfect example of a bastide, a fortified town with a regular layout built in the Middle Ages. Founded by Alphonse de Poitiers, it respects the common criteria for the construction of a bastide. In the centre of the Place des Cornières, the market hall where the economic power is exercised. The consular power sat on the first floor of the hall (today the premises house the local radio station, Radio 4). The spiritual power is a little off-centre, in the fortified church of the XIIIth century in rupture with the rectilinear plan of the bastide. Certainly one of the prettiest bastides of the department, classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France.
