Capital of French Hainaut, Valenciennes was at one time the steel and metallurgy capital of the Nord region. The many artists who hail from Valenciennes have earned the town the nickname "Athens of the North". It was the birthplace of the painter Watteau, the famous chronicler Froissart, the father of advertising Jean Mineur, the famous aviator Nungesser and the famous actor Pierre Richard. The town is part of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. For almost two and a half centuries, the Valenciennois was a land of progress and avant-garde, giving it a unique heritage today.
