The origin of Steenwerck dates back to the 12th century. The name of the town means "stone work" in Dutch. In the Middle Ages, the Becque, the river that runs through the town, was navigable, which allowed the town to experience an important economic boom. Almost completely destroyed during the Great War, Steenwerck was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. The four military cemeteries are the witnesses of this painful past. Today, Steenwerck is a picturesque municipality which seduces thanks to its museums, its religious buildings, its architectural heritage of Flemish style and its surrounding nature.
