The town of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux owes its name to the monk Amand, bishop of Maastricht. He is best known for his role as a missionary bishop and founder of abbeys around 633-639. Although prosperous, the city was subject to numerous fires and looting before being rehabilitated by Abbot Nicolas du Bois. He restored the surrounding wall and transformed the abbey into a princely residence. All that remains of the abbey today is the magnificent tower and the aldermanic building. The abbey tower, listed as a historical monument in 1846, houses a beautiful museum. In addition to the remarkable architecture of the tower and the history of the abbey, you will also discover elements of Amandin production, including a beautiful collection of ceramics and earthenware. There are also a number of works, sculptures and paintings from the former Southern Netherlands. In addition, some other vestiges have survived, such as the current tourist office. The city is revitalized thanks to the numerous projects carried out in cross-border, in particular by the Regional Natural Park, but also with its thermal activity. Several festivities punctuate the life of Amandinois, including the Faîtes du Jardin (end of May) or the International Festival of Carillon (around August 15).
