Rieulay was first a Gallo-Roman villa. At the end of the 12th century, the first lord of the town built a fortified castle (in front of the present town hall) as well as a chapel. During the two world wars, the city, like many others in the region, suffered numerous invasions and German occupations, before being liberated on October 19, 1918 by the British and on September 2, 1944 by the Americans. In addition to the castle, travelers can also enjoy a visit to the pigeon house, classified as a historical monument in 1973, and the church Notre-Dame des Orages. The city is also the seat of many associations.
