From the 12th century until 1790, the town was divided into two seigneuries: Tonneins-Dessous and Tonneins-Dessus, each with its own lord, castle, church, fortifications and currency. In 1791, they joined forces. Tonneins-la-Montagne and then Tonneins were born. The port on the Garonne was a driving force for its economic activity, later rivalled by the Canal Latéral à la Garonne and then by the railway. Tonneins remains the place of important industrial and rural activities, real orchard with the culture of strawberries, tomatoes, kiwis, apples... Tonneins will become an important centre of national ecotourism.
