Noordpeene is the largest municipality of the district of Dunkerque, with a surface area of 1,712 hectares. It is inhabited by 718 inhabitants (the local name is Noordpéenois). The name, which sounds deliciously Flemish, simply means "north of the Peene": noord means north (in modern Dutch) and the Peene is the small river that flows quietly through the village. For the record, there is also Zuytpeene, whose name refers to "south of the Peene". Don't miss the beautiful local things (the village is labeled Village Patrimoine) including the Regional Nature Reserve of the Schoubrouck Meadows!
