Marcq-en-Barœul is a city that is over a thousand years old! The discovery of a Gallo-Roman villa near the river Marque, which gives the city its name, is proof of this. Before the 13th century, the Barœul was a huge forest, spreading over the commune of Mons-en-Barœul and part of Villeneuve-d'Ascq. Today, one third of Marcq-en-Barœul is classified as a natural and rural area. It is a dynamic city, with many companies, including the headquarters of the Lesaffre company, world leader in yeast, and the Paul bakeries. For the anecdote, it is also here that the Carambar was invented in 1954. The historical factory has now moved to Bondues.
