Marcq-en-Barœul is a city that is over a thousand years old! The discovery of a Gallo-Roman villa near the river Marque, which gives the city its name, is proof of this. Before the 13th century, the Barœul was a huge forest, spreading over the commune of Mons-en-Barœul and part of Villeneuve-d'Ascq. Today, one third of Marcq-en-Barœul is classified as a natural and rural area.
