Marchiennes is a special case in the region. The town seems to live in autarky in the middle of the regional parks. Its history is linked to that of its abbey. Created in 630 by the Count of Douai, it became Benedictine after the reform of 1024. The Revolution caused its dismantling in 1792. At the same time, Marchiennes suffered various invasions before the population was decimated by the Black Death in the 14th century. The sequence of events is classic: the town could not preserve an industrial heritage of its own. Today, it is a pleasant town that has overcome the two wars and has preserved a beautiful heritage.
