Located between two great Roman roads, the strategic point of Le Cateau-Cambrésis, on the road of the great invasions, had an eventful destiny. It was not until 1678 that the Treaty of Nijmegen attached Le Cateau-Cambrésis to France. Note that the painter Henri Matisse was born there in 1869: a magnificent collection is collected in the Matisse Museum. Among the remarkable buildings, the Fénelon Palace, built in 1770 for the archbishops of Cambrai by the architect of the Paris Stock Exchange, Théodore Brogniart. A walk in its garden, designed in the style of Le Nôtre in 1766, is a must. In short, a stopover in Cateau will delight heritage lovers.
