During the Second World War, Hondschoote was at the center of the Battle of Dunkirk and the famous Operation Dynamo... and was its victim! In 1944, the Germans decided to flood the entire area to halt the Allied advance. The water spread as far as the city center. Yet, despite these vicissitudes, the town regained its splendor and prosperity thanks to the textile industry. The region's fertile soils were particularly well-suited to flax growing. From then on, flax crops populated the region, making Hondschoote one of the major centers for the production and processing of fibers from the beautiful blue flower.
