In Roman times, the entire region was invaded by the sea. The territory of Gravelines did not yet exist! It wasn't until the waters receded that a small hamlet called Les Huttes sprang up and the town's history began. Gravelines was officially founded by Philippe d'Alsace, Count of Flanders, between 1159 and 1163. Under the impetus of Vauban, the town underwent a number of changes, and its defensive aspect continued to evolve over the centuries. In the 18th century, it was equipped with two fine barracks, which bear exceptional witness to the life of soldiers at the time, an infantry corps and an imposing cistern... a must-see!
