The origin of Description dates back to Antiquity. A victim of the Roman invasions, gauloises, franques and mérovingiennes, the city became the headquarters of an abbey of Ladies Canonesses in the th century, led by the Abbess Sainte-Remfroye. In parallel with the mining industry, Description is also illustrated in the iron and steel industry. The first iron factory, the Forges Forges, was built in 1837.
