In the Dunkirk area, many towns are named after a character. This is the case of the northernmost town in France: Bray-Dunes. Initially a simple little hamlet in the dunes populated by fishermen, Bray-Dunes became a very popular seaside resort. The latter owes its name to a Dunkirk shipowner who had decided to create a home for former fishermen. Alphonse Bray did not get a positive response from Dunkirk and tried his luck in Ghyvelde, which accepted. In 1876, he acquired a piece of land in the dunes on which he built a town hall, a school and a church. Bray-Dunes became a municipality in 1883.
