Anzin, a town in the suburbs of Valenciennes, is known for being the first site in the mining basin of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais region where coal was mined. Emile Zola was even inspired by the great Anzin miners' strike (in 1884) to write Germinal. It was from this strike that the unions were born. From this past, Anzin has kept several sites, now listed as World Heritage Sites: the housing estate of Mont de la Vaine, the Dampierre castle, the slag heaps of Bleuse Borne or the "coron des 120". With its 55 hectares of green spaces, Anzin has also obtained the Villes fleuries label.
