The small town of 2,000 inhabitants, founded in the 13th century by Alphonse de Poitiers, is best known for its hat industry, which flourished at the end of the 19th century with no less than 26 factories. The famous hat owes as much to Septfonds as to its neighbour Caussade, the two towns sharing the Estivales du Chapeau. Septfonds is also the birthplace of the aviator Dieudonné Costes who was famous for his non-stop Atlantic crossings in the late 1920s, and for the Judes camp, a Spanish refugee camp at the beginning of the Second World War, of which a small but poignant cemetery remains today
