Perched on a small hillock on a bend in the Aveyron, the little town seems to dominate this immense, straight, alluvial plain which heralds the Quercy and Rouergue regions. Moreover, a few kilometres away, the river plunges into its famous gorges, towards Montricoux, Bruniquel and Saint-Antonin. This bastide took its curious name in the 13th century, from the colour of the blackened coats of the numerous charcoal producers. The town suffered from the wars of religion like Montauban, with an influence that will last until the present time. Nègrepelisse has experienced an unprecedented demographic boom in the last twenty years.
