Auvillar is a deformation of alta villa, "the high city", above the water. A Gallo-Roman city before being attached to the crown under Henry IV, the city developed two industries: earthenware and the preparation of goose quills for writing. The port district was then in full expansion. From this golden age remain the small alleys of blonde stones, bricks and pebbles, the triangular medieval square with semicircular or basket-handle corners, the arcaded and half-timbered houses of the 17th century, the Saint-Pierre church of the 12th century, the Consuls' house and its Louis XV portal, the underground grain silos and the tollboat center
