The cradle of the town is located on the heights of Hautpoul. Founded by the Visigoths in 413, this fortified village became a Cathar refuge in the 13th century. Besieged in 1212 by Simon de Montfort, the castle, whose ruins can still be seen today, was razed to the ground. The surviving inhabitants settled further down on the plain, between Arnette and Thoré, at Mas Arnette, giving birth to Mazamet. The town's reputation has spread across borders over the last two centuries. Despite its unfavorable geographical situation, the delainage and megisserie industries made the town a benchmark. A number of sites can be visited in the surrounding area.
