"What a poetic name, and at the same time, what a fitting one," you say to yourself as you catch sight of the city perched atop its rocky promontory! Its name, like that of Cordoba in Spain, derives from the leather and weaving industry that flourished here in the 13th and 14th centuries, for Cordes, founded in 1222 by the Count of Toulouse, was a prosperous city, so much so that it possessed up to five lines of fortifications. Its wealth enabled the construction and preservation of a large number of medieval monuments, which is why it is also known as the "city of a hundred arches". The city's history and treasures will be revealed on a rewarding and somewhat challenging walk... The steep ascent will take you past enclosures, gates and cobbled streets lined with historic old houses. When you reach the Grand-rue, you'll see the tall, vast Gothic houses, unique in France with their pointed arches, and their symbolic or mysterious sculptures and statues. The city that flirts with the sky also boasts a Southern Gothic church (listed as a Monument Historique in 1922), and above all, museums, artists and inspired craftsmen. This escape will allow you to immerse yourself in the history of the region and contemplate the treasures that still flourish today in this stone setting. On rainy days, you can visit one of the town's museums. In summer, take a trip to the Vère-Grésigne leisure park.
