Once a stronghold on a spur overlooking the Lot valley, Penne-d'Agenais is now a small town of craftsmen and a haven of peace with narrow, winding streets. At the foot of the spur lies Port-de-Penne, a former river port, now a stopover for yachtsmen sailing between Aiguillon and the Lustrac dam. Boats can be hired for a cruise on the Lot! Don't miss the small waterside market on Sunday mornings. In the shadow of the neo-Byzantine sanctuary dedicated to Notre-Dame de Peyragude, the narrow streets of the medieval village of Penne never tire of being explored. To get to know this village with its many nooks and crannies, you must first pass through one of the three fortified gates of the Ville, Ricard or Ferracap. Once inside, the historic heritage (houses built of a mixture of stone and brick) has retained a charm typical of Lot-et-Garonne architecture. After a stroll through the streets, you'll reach the sanctuary, where a panoramic view over the Lot valley will dazzle those brave enough to walk up rue Bombecul... The Sanctuary, with its 47 stained-glass windows, will be open to visitors, and for those who prefer to wander in nature, the Peyragude park, caves and medieval ruins will offer a moment of freshness and tranquillity, before heading back down into the village to quench their thirst in one of the many bars and restaurants in the village, high up or on the banks of the Lot.
