The village of Montesquieu is divided into two parts, Montesquieu-Haut and Montesquieu-Bas. It is the upper part that deserves a visit. At the top of a rocky spur, overlooking the valley, the remains of the fortified village remain as well as the ruins of the castle. The commune was a barony of which Charles Louis de Sécondat had the title. The philosopher, better known as Montesquieu was indeed baron de Labréde and Montesquieu. He came here rarely, if not to reap the benefits of his land, but it is under the name of this small village that the writer became famous. Montesquieu is also home to the regional plant conservatory of Aquitaine
