Crossed by a north-south Roman road, Lacapelle-Marival has been frequented by man since Antiquity. It is said that a young shepherdess was martyred during the retreat of the Arabs defeated by Charles Martel at Poitiers in 732. A small chapel is said to have been built here: the capelle de la Marie del Val, the remains of which were discovered in 1957. It's not this legend, however, but the imposing medieval castle dating from the 12thand 15th centuries that bears witness to Lacapelle-Marival's origins. Built by Géraud I de Cardaillac, it was the construction of this castle that really gave birth to the small town of today.
