Gramat, at the crossroads of several Roman roads, rose from the pain of the plague and the Wars of Religion. In another page of history, André Malraux was arrested here by the Germans in 1944. The great convent of Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire was founded to help the underprivileged: today, it welcomes pilgrims and tourists, and organizes exhibitions. Since the arrival of the railroads in the 19th century, Gramat has seen several major fairs bring life to its picturesque center. By 1880, Gramat was home to a large number of hotels, inns, cabarets and cafés. A tradition of hospitality continues to this day.
