To understand Figeac, you need to immerse yourself in its centuries-old history. The town was founded in the 9th century on the banks of the Célé river. It was a Benedictine abbey founded by Pepin I, King of Aquitaine and great-grandfather of the famous Pepin le Bref. Pilgrims on their way from Le Puy via Conques to Cahors or Rocamadour, then on to Santiago de Compostela, passed through here. Today, it's a popular stopover for pilgrims and tourists alike. A flamboyant city in the Célé valley, Figeac has many attractions. It was made world-famous by one of its children, Champollion, who deciphered the Rosetta Stone.
