The history of the oldest town takes us back to the time of the Gallo-Romans, but today it's more its medieval heritage that strikes the visitor. It was one of the first "free communes of Quercy" in 1256, and resisted English attackers throughout the Hundred Years' War, protected by its imposing fortifications. A Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion, Cajarc saw its walls razed in 1623 on the orders of Richelieu himself. It was also the birthplace of Françoise Sagan, who regularly returned here to recharge her batteries. The village is also famous for Coluche's sketch "Le Schmilblick".
