Baron Guérin de Castelnau decided in 1277 to create a new town, fortified in honour of the imposing castle of Castelnau built around the year 1000. The bastide of Bretenoux was thus born. Its square dungeon and its lordly dwelling in red stone were refurbished by a tenor of the Opéra-Comique, Jean Mouliérat. It contains important collections of furniture and works of art from the Middle Ages to the Revolution. The village is not lacking in interest: first of all, it abounds in authentic medieval half-timbered bastides. The Place des Consuls, the Guierle ogival door, the ramparts, the manor of Cère, that of the fort and the island of Bourgnatelle are also worth seeing.
