In 1277, Baron Guérin de Castelnau decided to create a new town, fortified in honor of the imposing Castelnau castle built around the year 1000. The bastide town of Bretenoux was thus born. The village is not lacking in interest, with its medieval half-timbered houses, the Place des Consuls, the ogival Porte de la Guierle, the ramparts, the Manoir de Cère, the Manoir du Fort and the Ile de la Bourgnatelle. The vacation home of French writer Pierre Loti as a child can be admired at the corner of rue d'Orlinde and rue Pierre-Loti. The square comes alive on market days, Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
