Already a lookout post in the time of Philip the Fair, some caves were fortified during the Hundred Years' War and used during the Wars of Religion. The "défilé des Anglais", a narrow passage under the rocks, is the most picturesque testimony to this. On the road to Saint-Géry, a seven-arch viaduct is visible. From the railroad bridge at the foot of the Ganil cliffs, the towpath, a spectacular 19th-century development in favor of navigation, was dug almost 1 km into the sheer cliffs. In 1984, Daniel Monnier sculpted the 18-metre-long, 3-metre-high cliff face.
