Named after the evangelist Severus, who was buried there after his martyrdom, the village took the name of Saint-Sever, and as pilgrims flocked to his tomb, Benedictine monks built an abbey. It then followed the same path as other abbeys in the département: prosperity, then the ravages of the Wars of Religion. During the French Revolution, the village was renamed Rostaing. Today, in a perfect religious-citizen union, this charming village is well worth a visit, not least for its abbey and its many cultural activities: permanent exhibitions, painting and sculpture shows, and concerts organized by the village.
