In 1022, after his miraculous recovery, the Duke of Gascony founded an abbey dedicated to Saint Pierre (Pé in Bigourdan). Situated on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, the passage of pilgrims made it a major pilgrimage center, and the town grew with the arrival of new craftsmen. Saint-Pé's itinerary followed that of the surrounding abbeys. Today, the charming village, with its 16th-century houses, arcaded square and terraced gardens, is one of the prettiest in the département. At the foot of the mountains and along the Gave, its natural heritage is remarkable, with the Bétharram caves and the Pibeste-Aoulhet regional nature reserve.
