This ancient walled city preserves beautiful remains, including a magnificent gate that has just been restored, many historic residences and several remarkable religious buildings. The city centre has a multi-service grocery store, a bar and even a dressmaker. Monléon-Magnoac comes alive in July during the four days of its samba festival, which moves the public throughout the region. The commune is known for its sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-Garaison (healing in patois) and its private school, which has trained generations of Magnoac students. Before being dethroned by Lourdes, Monléon-Magnoac was a very famous Marian pilgrimage site. It is said that in 1515, near a spring, several kilometres from the village and therefore in the countryside, a young girl saw the Virgin Mary. According to the wish she expressed at the time, a sanctuary was erected which over the centuries became an important place of devotion and pilgrimage. The sanctuary took the name of Notre-Dame-de-Garaison. Many ex-votos testify to the healings supposedly granted. The religious buildings are splendid, but if the faithful continue to come on pilgrimage, the place is now mainly inhabited by secondary school students, including about 300 interns, who enjoy the peace and spirituality that surrounds them. With 450 inhabitants, Monléon-Magnoac is one of the most populated villages in the territory and one of those that has kept its primary school. It is necessary to see the town hall with its columns which give it a proud appearance of a temple. The Pyreneanist Raymond d'Espouy (1892-1955), who was also a painter, farmer and cartographer, is one of the famous natives of Monléon-Magnoac. He was responsible for the first ascent, in 1954, with Pierre Billon (1917-2002), of the tip of the Cotieilla which would bear his name: the peak of Espouy
