The commune of Bartrès, a hamlet of 600 inhabitants, perpetuates the memory of Bernadette Soubirous. The saint spent several months here as a foster child with Maries Laguës. The Burg farmhouse has retained its rustic style, and nothing has been touched in the room where Bernadette lived. In the village church, the choir dating from the late 17th century has been preserved, as has its magnificent wash-house. The sheepfold in which Bernadette tended her sheep retains the atmosphere of the time (1856), and you really do get the impression that the shepherdess is about to emerge from the path with her lambs at any moment... Bartrès is one of those villages where time seems to have stood still.
