Capital of the Comminges region at the foot of the Pyrenees, Saint-Gaudens spreads out between the plain, the river and the hills. An active industrial city, the high chimneys of its cellulose factory draw a fantastic landscape on a mountainous background. A stopover town, it is located at the crossroads between the ocean and the Mediterranean, Toulouse and Spain. Inhabited since Antiquity, a free city in the Middle Ages, it now has a population of just over 10,000. Its vestiges of a distant past are few but deserve a careful pause. In particular, the sumptuous Romanesque collegiate church of the 11th-13th centuries and its partially restored cloister.
