Situated between Condom and Castéra-Verduzan, Valence-sur-Baïse is one of Gascony's most pleasant bastides. Its center is high above the river Baïse and the lower town, which grew up around the river port. The Auloue also flows through the commune. Although the famous Flaran abbey was founded in 1151, it wasn't until 1274 that the bastide town of Valence was founded a few kilometers away, under the patronage of the Spanish town of the same name. The Abbot of Flaran and the Count of Armagnac were at the helm, reinforcing the naturally defensive vocation of this rocky spur.
