This beautiful medieval village with its picturesque alleyways is particularly striking for its impressive fortified church. Massive and austere, it gives the impression of stepping back in time to the heart of the Middle Ages. After a devastating fire in 1141, the village, once the capital of the Astarac region, was rebuilt around the Benedictine abbey, which gave the inhabitants land to rebuild their houses. Relative peace in the region enabled the abbey to grow richer. It built a new, larger church, which Viollet-le-Duc restored in the 19th century, according to his inspiration, in a style reminiscent of the Ville Rose.
