At the northeastern limit of the Gers, at the gateway to the Lomagne and Gascony-Toulouse regions, Sarrant is a fortified island of 400 inhabitants. One enters through a door pierced in a 16th century tower. The church of Saint-Vincent sits in the center of this amazing medieval complex. It is surrounded by half-timbered houses which form a charming ensemble, listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France". In 1307, Sarrant was placed under the protection of the King of France and remained independent of any feudalism. Today, the village is home to one of the best bookstores in the Gers and the Maison de l'Illustration, an artists' residence and gallery
