Built during the 9th and 10th centuries, Riscle surrounded a castle and a chapel protected by ditches and baratz, thick ramparts. Its name comes from "risclo" which meant a row of stones placed in the bed of the river to attract fish. Riscle saw its 11th century castelnau transformed at the end of the Middle Ages into a more important town, thanks to its markets and fairs. Its 11th century Romanesque church is classified as a historical monument. At the crossroads of Armagnac, Béarn and Bigorre, Riscle marks the beginning of the country of Saint-Mont and Madiran wines, which are among the best wines of the Gers.
