In the heart of the Savès, the commune of Monblanc, bordering Samatan, has 366 inhabitants and is situated on the slopes of the right bank of the Save on the border with the Haute Garonne. The human occupation of this site is proven since the Paleolithic and especially in the Neolithic period which left vestiges of several Gallo-Roman agricultural establishments. In the High Middle Ages, two communities took shape. One at Quimbat near the present cemetery where the primitive Romanesque church stood, destroyed in 1955, the other at La Hillaire, a possession of the lords of Saint-Lary, hence the Latin name Sancto Hilario, which gave La Hillaire. In 1839, by prefectural decision, the commune of La Hillaire was attached to that of Monblanc. The castle on its promontory, destroyed during the Revolution, was replaced by a bourgeois residence, property of the engineer Jean Bertin, inventor of the aerotrain, who is buried in the Quimbat cemetery in Monblanc. The legend says that this promontory would have been raised by the women of the seigneury who would have transported this earth to build the "motte blanche" which would have given its name to the village. The church of Monblanc, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, has a beautiful wall-belfry with five bells that used to give rhythm to the life of the inhabitants. For the sake of modernism, a clock was added to the bell tower in 1866. Inside, the wall paintings are worth seeing. Those of 1880 are due to Eugène Duran and those of 1951 to the young Dutch painter Win Suermondt in a naive style full of flavour, in particular with regard to "vices and virtues". Arriving from Samatan, you will see one of the first Youth and Culture Centres in the Gers, installed in a building of contemporary architecture. Monblanc is an agricultural commune, essentially cereal growing, also known for its duck breeding and the Bassetto family canning factory. You can take advantage of the vast Pierre Bertin landscaped area at the foot of the church with a 180° view of the Pyrenees, 3 picnic tables, a playground and a large car park. As for the local festival of Monblanc, it takes place the last weekend of June.
