This pretty bastide was founded in 1281 on the site of the village of Saint-Jean-de-Lézian. The medieval alleys lead to the large central square surrounded by arcades and in the center of which a period bandstand is enthroned. At the end of the rue de l'Évêché, the bell tower-porch of the Sainte-Marie church spans the street with its two buttresses, a unique construction in France. The town also has the remains of fortifications, the Rohan, Astarac and Bourreau towers, as well as a beautiful 19th century steel-framed market hall. Since its foundation, the city was nicknamed Mirande-la-Jolie because of its perfect checkerboard. Today, it is a peaceful but lively rural town, stamped "Station Verte", and one of the few French cities to have obtained the demanding international label "Cittaslow", dedicated to the environment and quality of life. It is true that time takes on a special flavor within the beautiful walls of the bastide, or in the preserved countryside that surrounds it, which you can discover by taking one of the many hiking trails in the area. The culture is not left out, and the city even has its museum of fine and decorative arts, with a beautiful collection of paintings and old earthenware. Mirande is especially famous for its summer festivals, including the famous country music festival ("Country in Mirande"): for four days in July, the south of the Gers takes on the accents of the Deep South of the United States..
