Miélan is one of a hundred bastides that sprang up in Gascony between the mid-13th and 14thcenturies , a period of respite between the wars against the Albigensians and the Hundred Years War. Founded in 1284 by the King of France's seneschal in Languedoc, in paréage with the local lord, it took its name from the famous Italian city of Milan, locally distorted to Miélan. Destroyed in 1370 by the English, rebuilt and occupied again in 1450, it became capital of the duchy-pairie of Antin in the 18th century. After the Revolution, former churches were used as stone quarries. Napoleon, returning from Spain, passed through Miélan on July 24, 1808.
