The beating heart of the famous festival, the royal bastide of Marciac was founded in 1281 according to the typical checkerboard plan. As in most bastides, the central square was home to a market hall dedicated to trade. It was destroyed in 1871, leaving only a vast square - the largest in the Gers - which is used to welcome artists on stage during the Jazz in Marciac festival. All around, the elegant facades pierced with arcades shelter shops and restaurants. The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, a 15th century building with a square bell tower, has a triple nave and a pentagonal choir with 14th century sculptures.
