A monastic village, then an episcopal city from the 14th to 18th centuries, Lombez was bishop to Fénelon in the 17th century, but also to Cardinal Jacques Colonna, a friend of Petrarch. The Italian poet lived in Lombez in 1330 and wrote: "This illustrious and incomparable man, Jacques Colonna, then bishop of Lombez, [...] took me to Gascony and I spent an almost celestial summer at the foot of the Pyrenees". The imposing Sainte-Marie cathedral impresses with its brick architecture and superb octagonal bell tower. The town center is very well preserved, with a beautiful market hall, a checkerboard pattern of medieval streets and tall 18th-century houses.
