L'Isle-Jourdain, the informal capital of Toulouse's Gascony, is the closest city of Gers to Toulouse. Originally, it was a moving fief, when the Bouconne forest still lined the Garonne to form a barrier between Gascony and Haut-Languedoc. Ancient relay of the Roman road that linked Bordeaux to Jerusalem, the city was called Ictium before being renamed Ics in the Middle Ages. Its current name comes from the dynasty of the Jourdain lords, who went on crusade alongside the Count of Toulouse. The county was sold at the beginning of the 15th century to the Count of Clermont and then bought back by Jean IV, Count of Armagnac. According to the fortunes of the estate, the county landed in the lap of Henri de Navarre and was attached to the crown of France when he acceded to the throne under the name of Henri IV. L'Isle-Jourdain was then a Protestant fief. The city experienced a troubled and violent period during the Wars of Religion. When the Edict of Nantes was revoked, the castle, fortifications and temple were destroyed. The efforts made in the field of tourism have given the city the title of green vacation resort. Numerous sports activities are offered and the water level of the leisure center is equipped with recreational facilities including a water ski lift. The Airbus site in Toulouse has led many subcontractors to settle in L'Isle-Jourdain. The two cities are only 30 minutes apart: the commune is experiencing strong demographic growth: it is now the2nd largest city in the department.
